Hikarui Etymology

As I bring Hikarui into a new chapter, I’ve been re-visiting older thoughts to form a stronger sense of the new. It’s beautiful how much of it still resonates, even years later. Hikarui is one example in itself — a hybrid of the Japanese words “hikari” for visible/natural light, and “karui” for lightweight, Hikarui is a way of “lightweight living” that continues to guide everything I do, and I hope that it can for you too.

HIKARI/AKARUI (光/明るい)

(The Japanese word for visible light / bright or luminous light i.e. natural light)

+

KARUI (軽い)

(The Japanese word for lightweight)

=

HIKARUI (ひかるい)

Born from an exploration into ways of living gently, intuitively and intentionally, Hikarui is a gentle counter to the overwhelm of navigating through the world, a far-reaching foundation that intertwines daily life, work, creative practice, travel, relationships, and more.

It’s a concept that shows up a little differently for everyone — the LBB is a realisation of this, a space to guide and make personal allowance for what feels right individually, embracing the ever-changing rhythms of mood, desire, and energy, balancing the multi-facets of ourselves by allowing them to co-exist in complement with each other.
